The Relationship Between A Samurai Sword And The Samurai Warrior

The Samurai Warrior has it its origins in the Heian Period of the late 8th and early 9th centuries under Emperor Kammu. The emperor formed armies made of professional warriors as well as conscripts to put down rebellions and warring lords. He introduced the term Seiitaishogun, or Shogun, which marked the Samurai Warrior beginnings.

The original Samurai Warriors fought from horseback and used primarily bow and arrow. They quickly began to evolve and began following their own ethical code, called Bushido. It was also during this time that they were defeated in battle by the Mongols which forced them to reevaluate their weapons and tactics. At this time they adopted the Samurai Sword as their primary choice of combat weaponry.

The two Samurai Swords that a Samurai Warrior carries are called Daisho. They in concert are often referred to as the warrior’s soul. The two swords are made up of first the primary fighting blade known as the Katana Sword, and then a smaller blade known as the Wakizashi Sword. The Samurai was so closely tied to his swords that he named them and believed that the outcome of a battle was directly influenced by them.

A young Samurai, when he reached the age of thirteen, was given an adult name and a Wakizashi Blade. This ceremony initiated the youth into the ways of the Samurai. It was only later that the young Samurai would be given the permission to carry a Katana Sword by the elders.

The Samurai Warrior, Samurai Sword relationship would only end at the time of death. It was said that Samurai Warrior would die carrying his sword into battle or at his own hand during the ritual of seppuku. Seppuku, or ritual suicide, was performed by the Samurai Warrior himself using his Wakizashi Blade.
